Sanusi Ibrahim Geza, the commander of the group, did not give further details on how they were arrested or why they suspected they were gay.

He also not give details on legal proceedings against them, but said they had been over to the Hisbah Commission “for further action”.

The Hisbah Commission is an implementation arm of Sharia, the Islamic legal code.

Kebbi is one of the states practising Sharia in northern Nigeria, where the most severe penalty for homosexuality is death by stoning, although this has not been meted out to anyone yet.

Nigeria has banned same-sex union, despite opposition from Western countries.

Geza was briefing the media on the first anniversary of his group on Monday.
