WhatsApp has introduced a new ‘status’ feature which shares similar characteristics with Instagram and Snapchat stories.

Through the new feature, users can now upload pictures, gifs and videos – but no text – as their status.

Like Instagram and Snapchat stories, Whatsapp’s status disappears after 24 hours.

To use Whatsapp status, your app has to be updated to the latest version. Afterwards, you will see a status tab on the top bar.

Users can add a status update by clicking the new update button on the bottom right corner which opens the camera.

Once added, you can tap on the status tab and see how many people have viewed your status, just as in Instagram. There are options to delete or forward the status as well.

When viewing friends’ updates, users can also swipe up and send replies to them.

WhatsApp has also introduced privacy settings to control who can see your status.

Through ‘privacy settings’, users can choose who to share their status with by choosing either ‘my contacts except’, or ‘only share with’.

You cannot ‘post’ any text Status, which is rather strange. If you want to say something you have to say it with photos.
